Passageway Games is this small, four-person indie studio from Abilene, Texas that started back in 2014. What makes them unique? Well, the two founders, Jon Grierson and John Hendrick, are actually septuagenarians who first teamed up 30 years ago working on a medical device project! Apparently, Hendrick was blown away by Grierson’s work ethic and creativity, so when Grierson pitched the idea of making an indie game—drawing on his 50 years of RPG experience—they decided to give it a go. Their game, Passageway of the Ancients, is a total throwback to those classic CRPGs from the ‘90s and early 2000s. It throws you into Aieryon, the last magical planet in the galaxy. In this game you will be roaming the city of Ithgar, trying to solve some mysterious, unspeakable crime while being hunted by all sorts of deadly creatures. The gameplay is pack with managing your party, leveling up, solving Runic puzzles, and even picking locks to score the best loot. Sounds like a real challenge.
Combat isn’t a walk in the park either. It is got a mix of turn-based and real-time mechanics, and the devs took inspiration from actual historical weapons and battle tactics to make it tough and unpredictable. According to him, “Dragonkindt are part angelic being, part shapeshifter, and part Dragon. These creatures were thought to be merely the phantasms of some eastern poetic genius, inspired prophet, or demented scholar.” Yeah, it’s as epic as it sounds.
