Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a dark and mature first-person open-world RPG inspired by Arthurian legends, but this is definitely not the happy fairy-tale version of King Arthur. The game takes place around 600 years after Arthur’s fall, with Avalon still trapped in endless conflict. You’ll explore a huge fantasy world, uncover what happened to the kingdom, and make choices that can completely change how the story plays out.
There’s a massive amount of content here, with around 50–70 hours of gameplay spread across three large zones. The main story has plenty of branching paths, and there are hundreds of side quests featuring interesting characters with full voice acting. You can basically explore the world however you want, with hidden items, secrets, dungeons, unique enemies, strange NPCs, and quests waiting around almost every corner.
The best part is that you’re not forced into one specific type of character. You can create your own build by mixing different attributes, skills, equipment, perks, and crafting options. Want to run around with a sword and shield? Go for it. Prefer bows and stealth? Easy. You can also use magic, throwing weapons, potions, and other tools, then mix everything together to create your own style.
Combat lets you switch between different weapons and abilities depending on what you’re fighting. You can attack with melee weapons, block with shields, dodge incoming attacks, parry enemies, fire arrows, cast spells, or throw different items into the fight. There are plenty of enemies to deal with, so learning their attacks and figuring out which abilities work best can make a huge difference.
The character-building system gives you a lot of freedom to make some seriously crazy builds. You could create an alchemist berserker who runs straight into enemies and punches them to death, a magical blacksmith who can summon undead creatures, or a stealthy archer who stays hidden and picks enemies off from the shadows. Basically, if you have a weird character idea in mind, there’s a good chance you can build around it.
With three huge zones to explore, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon gives you plenty of reasons to wander off the main path. Every area is filled with quests, NPCs, gear, secrets, enemies, and hidden locations, so you never really know what you’re going to find next. If you’re into open-world RPGs where your choices, character build, and exploration actually matter, Avalon has a lot to offer.
