BIRDCAGE is this fast, chaotic vertical shoot ’em up that feels like someone mashed together the best parts of 90s arcade games with modern gameplay and storytelling. It’s loud, stylish, and constantly throwing action at you. And honestly the whole vibe hits different especially when the game asks straight-up: What’s a bullet worth when you’ve got a freaking sword? You play as HALCYON, this experimental RADON gunship that honestly feels like a monster once you get the hang of it. You’ve got your wide shot, your focus shot, but the star of the show is The SWORD — your main offensive and defensive weapon. It makes the whole game feel way more aggressive and up-close compared to your usual shoot ’em ups.
The story goes surprisingly deep too. It is set in this weird alternate future for humanity and it leans hard into sci-fi vibes inspired by Metal Gear Solid. You get futuristic tech, political drama, military conflict, and even stuff about the human mind and consciousness. Story Mode takes you through six stages, each with their own mid-bosses, massive bosses, and little narrative breaks that flesh out the world. And then there’s Score Attack, which is basically a timed pressure cooker — enemies don’t stop spawning, and you just push for the highest score while sharpening your skills.
The whole aesthetic is super nostalgic. It uses old-school tricks like sprite scaling, pre-rendered backgrounds and limited textures to make everything look like early 3D games from the 90s, but cleaner. The soundtrack goes hard too mixing retro hardware sounds with modern synths and samples to create something that feels both old-school and fresh. There’s over an hour of music, tons of custom sound effects, and even retro-style voice lines for the bosses. The world itself is distribution between two big factions. SELENE holds the Moon and what is left of Earth while RADON controls the huge space colony known as the CAGE. Under Mother ROENTGEN’s orders, RADON has created the WORLD-EGG — basically a superweapon meant to end Earth’s rule and rewrite the universe. And that is where you come in. Deep inside the CAGE, a pilot wakes up inside HALCYON, hearing a mysterious voice in their head: Destroy the WORLD-EGG. And that’s your mission — whether you fully understand it or not.
