OVERVIEW OF AILIA
Imagine stepping through a mirror and actually meeting your own “reflection.” Kinda wild, right? That is basically the whole setup of AiliA. You play as Ail, a girl who throws herself into this trippy, mirrored dimension to save her twin sister, Lia, who’s stuck somewhere inside these reflections.
Ail does not have any crazy superpowers—she can only phase through mirrors and wander into this alternative space where reflections are actually solid. You can walk on stuff inside the mirror, trigger mechanisms that shouldn’t even be real, and mess around with the world by rotating mirrors or moving them to create paths. Every puzzle feels like you’re bending reality and illusion together just to figure out what’s actually going on.
AiliA was made by a team from NYU’s Game Center, and honestly, it shows. The game has this super Polish 3D puzzle style with a strong Chinese aesthetic and it is already won a bunch of awards in the US, China and Japan. Stuff like the China Game Innovation Awards, the Golden Dolphin Award, and it was even part of the Tokyo Game Show Indie lineup. The soundtrack is also insane. Mark Benis brought in musicians who literally worked on games like Elden Ring, Street Fighter V, and Final Fantasy XV. The music blends Chinese instruments—like the Erhu and Dizi—with Western violins to fit the whole “reflection” theme. They even use tricks like reversed melodies and inverted notes so the soundtrack itself feels like you are stuck between two worlds. It ends up making Ail and Lia’s story hit way harder.
Gameplay-wise, the game is all about breaking the line between what’s real and what’s just a reflection. Mirrors are not just surfaces—they are full spaces you can explore, interact with and use to solve problems. Every time you step through one, you get a whole new angle to approach the puzzle. Across seven beautiful levels inspired by Chinese art—like ink-wash forests or glowing glass palaces—you’ll find side quests, hidden rooms, surprises, all that good stuff.
There are over 100 puzzles, plus secret challenges that feel impossible until you finally crack them. You’ll collect Mirror Fragments along the way, which slowly reveal the memories and connection between Ail and Lia. The mirror mechanics get crazy too—water reflections, recursive mirrors, and even boss battles built around mirror puzzles. It’s a super unique twist that keeps things fresh from start to finish.
The game’s story is told across three connected threads. The main one is your journey through the mirror world. Then you have memory moments from the real world whenever you break a Magic Mirror. And the third path follows Lia, but you only unlock it if you collect enough Mirror Fragments. Pieces of lore are scattered around the world like soul shards, giving hints and dropping poetic lines that make the story feel way deeper. The whole thing deals with themes of loss, growing up, and learning how to face the world again after losing someone important.
