Legion Was Here is a dark-comedy spy game where your job is to investigate clues, change your appearance, and steal other people's identities to complete some seriously weird missions. You play as Legion, a secret agent with the crazy ability to change his face whenever he wants. Intelligence agencies from all over the world hire him to handle dangerous undercover jobs, and sometimes that means pretending to be someone's husband, brother, or even son. Sounds simple, right? One small mistake, though, and the whole mission could end in disaster.
Before heading out on a mission, you’ll need to visit the operating room and customize Legion’s appearance. You can change almost everything, including his age, hairstyle, nose, and eye color. With more than 900 million possible combinations, there are tons of ways to create the perfect look for each assignment. The challenge is figuring out which appearance will help you get close to your target without raising any suspicion.
Every mission comes with a detailed identity file packed with documents and clues. You’ll need to study everything carefully and connect the information to work out what your new identity should look like. Even the smallest details can matter, so don’t ignore anything, not even something as random as a chocolate bar wrapper. Once you’ve figured out the right appearance, you can approach your target and try to earn their trust.
Getting through the door is only half the job. You’ll also need to act like the person you’re pretending to be, and that’s where the visual novel gameplay comes in. You’ll face multiple-choice conversations that test how well you understand your fake identity and how convincingly you can answer questions. The documents you studied earlier, along with the notes you wrote on your hand, can help you avoid saying something that blows your cover.
The game offers around 3–4 hours of gameplay and features a wide variety of missions. You’ll work with familiar spy agencies like the FBI and MI6, but things can get much stranger when unusual clients show up. From mysterious ghosts from the past to amusement park mascots, pretty much anyone can hire Legion for a job. And if you want to prove you’re the perfect agent, you can replay missions to improve your score and aim for that 100% rating.
Just remember that missions won’t always play out the same way, so you’ll need to stay alert and adapt your approach. If you want the highest score, you’ll have to be convincing, pay attention to details, and avoid making mistakes that could expose your identity.
Legion Was Here was created entirely by a solo developer, with the exception of the saxophone music, which was played by the developer’s friend Pierre. The developer also states that no AI was used to make the game. One thing to keep in mind before playing is that some scenes contain flashing lights and visual effects that could trigger seizures in people who are sensitive to them.
