A missing brother. A cursed VHS tape. And a government cover-up that goes way deeper than it should. That’s the messed-up situation you’re thrown into in Dead Format.
Set in 1990s Scotland, this survival horror game puts you in the shoes of a sibling desperately trying to find their brother, who vanished after becoming obsessed with a strange and dangerous VHS format. To find him, you literally dive into the tapes, fighting through twisted, cinematic worlds pulled straight out of different eras of film. Time is running out, and every tape pulls you closer to the truth — or something way worse.
Your apartment acts as your safe space and main hub. It’s where you catch your breath, piece together clues, and get ready for what’s next. From there, you use your TV to play VHS tapes that open doors to new nightmare worlds. Each tape is inspired by a different film style, from silent-era cinema to Italian giallo and full-on 80s body horror. You may also be interested link the game Dead Format
Survival is key. You will need to scavenge for supplies, find important items to solve puzzles and unlock new paths forward. Along the way, you can arm yourself with weapons and tools that fit the movie worlds you’re exploring, making every section feel fresh and tense.
You’ll also come across creepy homemade VHS footage that starts blurring the line between what’s real and what isn’t. Each world has its own enemies, puzzles, and environments and your apartment is the only place where you can save the game — so finding shortcuts and safe routes really matters.
Everything in Dead Format is made specifically for the game, including the VHS footage which was recorded and edited by the developer himself. The project is created by Scottish solo dev Chris Evry (Katanalevy), known for crafting dark, intense horror experiences like Cardiac, Symphony of Seven Souls, and Daemonologie.
