Kernel Hearts is a pretty unique game that mixes action RPG gameplay with roguelike elements and multiplayer co-op. You play as part of the M.A.H.O.U. Unit, and your main goal is to climb the massive Tower of Babel. As you go higher, you’ll fight all kinds of strange angel-like creatures while trying to defeat God and save a world that has basically been destroyed and covered in ashes. The combat is all about experimenting and creating crazy combos. During each run, you can mix different attacks, spells, movement abilities, and special powers together. The more creative you are with your abilities, the more powerful your attacks can become, letting you absolutely destroy the enemies standing in your way. You also don’t have to do everything alone. You can team up with up to four players and fight your way through the tower together. Every level eventually ends with a tough boss fight against the guardian of that area, so you’ll need to work together and figure out how to take them down. Whenever an expedition ends, you return to the latest memory backup at a laboratory located near humanity’s final surviving settlement. The rewards you earn from each run can then be used to upgrade your character and make future attempts easier. One of the main upgrade systems involves M.A.H.O.U.OS, where you can unlock and equip up to 256KB worth of chips. You can customize these chips however you want, allowing you to create a setup that matches your preferred playstyle. Basically, you can experiment with different builds and figure out what works best for you.
There’s also a special power connected to the Tower itself. By using its energy, you can temporarily remove the Heavenly Curse affecting you. This gives you access to a powerful attack that can wipe out nearby enemies and lets you enter your true form for a short amount of time. It’s basically a temporary power-up that can completely change the flow of a fight. While exploring the tower, you’ll also meet its strange inhabitants. You can interact with them, give them gifts, and slowly build stronger relationships. So, besides all the fighting and climbing, there’s also a social side to the game where you can get to know the characters living inside the tower.
