Blades & Battles is basically a fast and fun 2.5D beat ’em up where steel, magic, and Arthurian legends all come together. You can play as Arthur or Lancelot before the famous Round Table even exists, with both knights having their own rivalry and heroic story. The game has a really old-school arcade feel, with colorful medieval areas, tons of enemies coming at you, and huge boss fights that keep things moving. The pixel-style visuals mixed with 3D environments also give it that retro look while still making the game feel modern and cinematic.
Arthur and Lancelot each have different weapons, moves, combos, and special abilities, so you can pick whichever knight fits your playstyle better. The gameplay is pretty straightforward: move through fantasy locations, beat up groups of enemies, chain attacks together, use magic, and take down some seriously big bosses. The combat is easy to jump into and has that satisfying button-mashing feeling, but the different combos and character abilities give you more to play around with. You can also play the campaign locally with a friend, although co-op needs a joystick, so you can't just use two keyboards.
The biggest thing about Blades & Battles is how much it feels like those classic arcade fantasy games. It has that lane-based fighting style and over-the-top medieval action you might remember from games like Golden Axe, but it mixes that style with polygonal environments and pixel-filtered visuals. Instead of giving you a massive open world or complicated loot system, the game keeps things focused on short levels, legendary knights, crazy enemy battles, and having fun with a friend.
If you’re into retro beat ’em ups or just want a simple fantasy game that you can play on the couch with someone else, this one definitely has that vibe. Older players will probably enjoy all the classic arcade inspiration, while newer players can just jump in and enjoy the easy-to-learn combat without needing to understand a bunch of complicated systems.
