The Killing Stone is a dark and stylish card battler made by the creators of The Blackout Club and The Magic Circle. The game mixes strategy with storytelling and takes place in the 17th century somewhere deep in the Arctic Circle. At the center of every match is a ceremonial board built around the Fanghella, also known as the Killing Stone. You use magical creature figurines, spells, and strange incantations to outplay your opponent with smart tactics. The pieces feel alive and full of personality, making every move feel satisfying while still giving you time to carefully think through your strategy.
One of the interesting mechanics is the Reserve System, which lets you stack units and buffs above the battlefield so you can deploy them later at the perfect moment. Between battles, the story unfolds in a first-person perspective with a painterly visual style. You play as a Maven, someone who has mastered dark magic and also happens to be the last friend of a woman named Mariken. As you explore her family’s mansion, you’ll talk to relatives and even animal familiars to uncover what really happened during her final days.
The story also has a unique storytelling style. It’s told in both authentic 17th-century English and a more modern version of the language. Players can switch between the two for both text and voice acting, depending on what they prefer. As you talk with different characters, branching dialogue choices reveal more about the family’s mysterious curse and the fears and motivations of the people involved.
Every battle you fight is part of a larger ritual bargain against demons working for the Devil. These demons enjoy making deals and messing with people’s fate, especially when they think they can win. But if you’re clever, you can turn their own games against them.
Each member of the Svangård family has their own deck representing their soul, which has been cursed with debts left behind by their ancestor. During bargains, you can gain powerful Boons that help them or dangerous Banes that make things worse. The choices you make permanently affect that character’s fate.
You only have a limited number of rounds to negotiate during each ritual, and only a few rituals before the final judgment arrives. The demons you face and the bargains they offer change as the game progresses, so every playthrough feels different. Replaying the game can unlock new dark powers and even lead to completely different endings.
Your main goal is to break the Svangård family’s curse before the Devil finally shows up to collect what he’s owed.
