OVERVIEW OF BIG HOPS

BIG HOPS is this wild 3D platformer/action-adventure where movement is everything, and you literally use a frog-tongue to do half the crazy stuff in the game. On top of that, you can grow veggies to build your own paths like some kind of parkour-gardener hybrid. It sounds goofy, but it’s honestly sick.

You play as Hop, a young frog who gets kidnapped by this trickster spirit named Diss. He says you’re on some super important mission, but all you wanna do is get back home to your family. Eventually, this old raccoon shows up and tells you he’ll build you an airship if you collect enough airship parts. From there, you are basically hopping across different worlds trying to get these parts and figure out what Diss is really up to.

Each world is basically its own mini-story. You’ll infiltrate the Gulley Gang’s hideout in the red desert, save ocean oil-rig workers as a Bucko, and sneak under a shattered mountain past weird cultists. Every place has its own lore, characters and problems and you decide whether you are actually helping out or just doing things for your own gain. And yeah, Diss keeps asking for these “Dark Drips,” and you can’t help but wonder what he’s really planning. Gameplay-wise, BIG HOPS goes deep. Hop’s movement kit feels straight out of the best platformers ever made. You can roll, dive, wall-run, free-climb, rail grind, slide on your belly, swing on poles, tightrope walk, and a ton more. It’s giving Mario, Sonic Adventure, BOTW, A Hat in Time — and it honestly keeps up with all of them.

But the real star is the frog tongue. This thing is insane. You use it like a hookshot, a grappling swing, a grab tool, and a physics launcher all in one. Doors, levers, switches, flingers — the tongue makes interacting with everything stupidly fun. Even 10 hours in, you’ll still be surprising yourself with what you can do.

Then there are the Veggies — basically items you plant to change the environment. Mushrooms become bounce pads, acorns grow climbable vines, balloons turn into floating platforms, apples give you places to tongue-swing from, and cacti launch tightropes. Every veggie lets you solve problems in your own way, and since you can only hold one, your backpack becomes a huge part of the strategy.

Collectibles actually feel meaningful too. Dark Drips help progress Diss’s duty, Dark Bits unlock gameplay-changing Trinkets and you can upgrade your backpack, buy veggie types and drip your character out with hats, outfits and dyes. There are bugs to collect, gadgets to build, mixtapes to play — it’s packed.

The world variety is crazy. Besides the four main worlds — forest, desert, ocean, and mountain — you’ll find all sorts of side areas like Bucko Cove, the Boneyard, Hydro Plant, and Gulley Gang HQ. It really makes the adventure feel massive and alive.

Chris, the dev, has been building BIG HOPS since 2019. His whole goal was to modernize 3D platformers and bring that “freedom and creativity” energy you see in games like BOTW and Spelunky. Over time, the game picked up inspiration from Mario, Zelda, Psychonauts, Sonic Adventure, Steven Universe, Avatar, SpongeBob — basically all the childhood bangers.

And now, with a bigger team behind it, BIG HOPS is shaping up to be one of the most creative, expressive platformers in years.
