Banquet for Fools takes place in a world where the gods have totally ditched the Vollings, pushing them to embrace paganism just to get by. But these folks? They are tough cookies. One ambitious lord is diving headfirst into the challenge of settling an island that’s been empty since its ancient civilization bit the dust.
He’s hoping to turn the cursed land into a thriving farm, harvesting a super-valuable spice that only grows on those hills. Things start looking up for him, but just as he’s getting things rolling, trouble comes crashing in from all directions.
Just when he’s about to hop on his boat to fend off a greedy neighbor eyeing his fields, he gets a shocking message: everyone on one of his farms has mysteriously vanished! With no time to waste he rounds up four brave guards to explore the island and unravel this creepy mystery.
Get ready to roam the vast island of Anuemona in this epic open world adventure alongside four randomly generated companions. Depending on their unique stats, they’ll throw out different dialogue options with NPCs and each other, growing closer as they trek through the wilds. You’ll have a pack-boro with you, a trusty beast that can haul your boat and all the cool stuff you find along the way. As you visit towns you will accumulation clues and stock up on awesome gear for your staff. Your role as a guard means you will lend a hand to all sorts of folks from farmer to artisans and even some mystical Gadaars hidden around. Since the island was settled five years ago, grave robbers have swooped in like vultures, and it’s a constant struggle to keep them away from Exile Island.
Now, here is the twist: there’s no auto-compass or quest log in Banquet for Fools, so you’ll have to rely on scrolls for your missions. Figure out how to navigate this expansive island is part of the thrill!
You will need to equip your four friend with an array of skills to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. Choose their favorite weapons, armor, pagan spells, animal binding abilities, and even some slick music and rogue skills. As you grind through your adventures, you will level up your partner and unlock more powerful abilities. When a character racks up enough XP, they get to level up and distribute three stat points into whatever skills they want to boost. The more you use a skill, the more bonuses you’ll earn when leveling up!
Even though the Vollings have gone all-in on paganism, their ancient gods are still out there, listening through stone likenesses. If you’re lucky enough to catch their attention, they might even reward you with custom holy items tailored just for you. But, of course these gifts come with a price and you will have to prove your worth by completing quests. These petty gods are competitive, so choose your statues wisely! You will find a mix of ancient and freshly built statues scattered around the island, each bestowing different powers, and you can level up your blessings as you progress.
Combat is going to be a blast! You can customize your musical setlist, to buy songs that trigger special effects during battles. These tunes can kick in at different moments—like when a foe falls or when your teammates are low on health. You can only memorize a limited number of songs at once, so think carefully about which ones to bring into each fight to match your style and team setup.
You will also dive into some wild spell crafting. Different Vol trees offer unique spell effects and you can whip up your own custom spells by using their birch and etching runes with your blood. As you grow stronger you can make even more powerful variants. There are three main Pagan skills to master: Fauna, Vines and Spores, each with its own specialty and practical uses throughout the game.
Your crew has to know when to stick to the rules, when to bend them, and when to break them altogether. You can snag items from shops, but doing so means they’ll be gone for good if you get caught. Keep an eye on guards and merchants’ schedules so you can strike when the coast is clear!
If you ruffle some feathers and rack up a bounty, you’ll need to watch your back, as the locals won’t be too friendly. But if things get dicey, just yell “bribe” to pay off your bounty and smooth things over.
Running low on arrows while crawling through a dungeon? Or maybe you’re stuck on an island with kids playing hide and seek in the trees, and you can’t find any explosive elyxirs? No Troubles! With a field kit in your inventory, you can resupply without needing to trek back to a shop. The kit lets you craft ammo for arrows, darts and elixir on the go. Grab wood and arrowheads from wildlife for arrows, whip up poisonous darts from sketchy plants, or turn healing amphoras into explosive elyxirs with special effects.
The Pavura has a different point of view to justice. Instead of executing criminals, he ships them off to a spooky rock called Exile Island, which is full of ghosts just waiting for more company. You’ll have the option to choose whether your crew attacks to kill or just stun enemies. Killing is the safer bet, but if a ghost keeper is around, they might come back as ghosts! Stunning knocks them out for a whole day, giving you a chance to report them for coins while keeping Exile Island’s population in check. Just remember, you need proof of the crime; otherwise, your characters might end up in hot water!
Farmsteads from various Houses on Minorev have settled on the island under the Pavura’s rule, and they’ll throw all sorts of quests your way. Your relationships with different towns are unique, and if you earn the reeve’s trust, you might score some sweet rewards.
Banquet for Fools features real-time combat that you can pause whenever you need to strategize. When your action bar fills up, you can hit pause and plan your next move. You’ll control one companion at a time but can switch between them whenever you want, while the others follow your tactics from the formation menu.
If you’re facing off against heavily defended enemies, go for a critical attack to weaken them for your buddies to follow up. You can even combine your attack rolls when you unlock Rally attacks, allowing you to unleash a flurry of strikes together!
This game is a passion project from just two people. They’ve previously launched Isle of Bxnes and Serpent in the Staglands (which is set in the same universe as Banquet for Fools) under a publisher called Mechajammer.
Banquet for Fools is feature complete, and the team is focused on crafting maps and new content this autumn and winter. They’ve tackled all the tricky stuff, so now it’s all about polishing and fine-tuning everything based on player feedback. They are all about keep the game balanced for everyone while still offering plenty of challenges.
You’ll be able to create a character at any point in Early Access and keep going smoothly through updates until you reach the end. Some songs and intercessions might change, but you’ll still have access to them regardless of updates. The numbers and item stats will definitely shift as they fine-tune things. With the unique nature of custom spells, if there are any major changes to spell effects, you won’t be able to recreate the same spell, but your existing ones will still be usable.
Right now, in Early Access 1.0, there are tons of unique creatures on the island, five different races of Vollings to choose from, and over 100 unique items to discover. Weapon types come with their own animations, and all skills and abilities are fully functional, including crafting your spells and using your field kit to make projectiles on your travels.
So, whether you’re ready to embrace the chaos of paganism or take on the mysteries of Invimona, Banquet for Fools promises an adventure packed with thrills, challenges, and epic stories waiting to be written! Plus, you don’t need to have played Serpent in the Staglands to jump in; but if you’ve got save data, you can import it and help shape the world of Vol with your past experiences.
